The Quiet Room
The Woman Who Never Left

Early

Gareth Voss wasn't supposed to be home until Friday.

The conference had ended a day early, and instead of texting ahead, he'd wanted to surprise them — Poppy especially, who'd cried at the airport when he left, small fists clutching his jacket. He let himself in through the side door, dropped his bag in the hall, and started up the stairs toward the sound of raised voices.

Ingrid's voice, sharp as a blade drawn from its sheath: "You will stop this nonsense right now."

He stopped outside Poppy's door, hand on the frame.

"I'm not lying," Poppy said, small and shaking. "I saw her. I did."

"There is no her, Poppy. Your mother is dead. Do you understand me? Dead people don't visit little girls at night. You're making up stories again, and I am tired — tired — of cleaning up after your stories."

Gareth pushed the door open.

Ingrid's face rearranged itself in half a second — fury smoothing into concern, like a mask sliding into place. "Gareth. You're early."

Poppy was pressed into the corner of her bed, knees to her chest, eyes red. When she saw him, something in her face cracked open with relief so raw it frightened him.

"Daddy—"

"Hey, hey. I'm here." He crossed the room and knelt by the bed, and only then did he notice the faint red mark blooming along her wrist, the way she flinched when his hand passed too close. "Poppy, what happened?"

"She's had a difficult week," Ingrid said smoothly, already reaching for the light switch, for control of the room. "Overtired. Overimaginative. You know how she gets—"

"I wasn't asking you." He kept his eyes on his daughter. "Poppy. What did you see?"

Poppy's mouth trembled. Her eyes flicked once toward Ingrid, quick and terrified, and then back to him, and whatever calculation happened in that half-second, she chose him.

"Mommy's not dead," she whispered. "Ingrid talks to her on the phone. I heard her. Mommy's alive."

Behind him, Ingrid went very, very still.
